  • When I first moved to New York City from Indiana, one of the first exploratory trips I took out of the city was to Montauk. To a landlocked Midwesterner like me, Montauk felt like it popped out of a magical story about sea captains and sailboats. So when the folks at @Montaukdistillingco_ reached out to see if I'd be interested in making a cocktail with one of their spirits and they told me the backstory of how it was the love of beaches and love of the water that led to the idea of Montauk Distilling Co... I totally got it. Who wouldn't want to live and start a family business in that magical storybook place? (#AD #21+)
.
The Montauk Distilling Co. Black Sail Rum is aged longer than light rum in heavily charred barrels, which gives it a much stronger flavor. I wanted to play with a strong but perfect-for-summer flavor to pair with the aged rum. Since I've been pretty obsessed with rhubarb this season, it felt like the perfect experiment. Using my Flavor Thesaurus book, I also read that nutmeg goes really well with rhubarb. (And I love that nutmeg feels like this open-sea Caribbean pirate flavor when you put it in summer dishes and drinks!) After some tinkering, I came up with the recipe below! .
.
🎀The Rumbarbara 🎀
🔸2oz @Montaukdistillingco_ Black Sail Rum
🔸.75oz 1:1 Rhubarb simple syrup
🔸1oz fresh lemon juice
🔸Sprinkle of (fresh) grated nutmeg
.
Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice. Shake, strain, and serve in a rocks glass with ice. Garnish with rhubarb ribbons and some flowers! (Rhubarb ribbons are easy to make with a vegetable peeler or a mandoline!)
.
🎀 Rhubarb Simple Syrup🎀
🔸1 cup sugar
🔸1 cup water
🔸~2 stalks fresh rhubarb, roughly chopped
.
Directions: Add the sugar, water, and chopped rhubarb to a saucepan on low heat. Simmer the syrup until the rhubarb gets soft and the syrup turns pink, about 20 minutes. (If you want it to be extra pink, feel free to add a pinch of hibiscus tea!) Chill and store up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.

  • Up in Katonah, NY for the weekend with cocktails full of daylilies and milkweed. We’ve got a big crew of 11 staying in an old house so I’ve been making cocktails in batches. @maggiejhoffman’s new book, “Batch Cocktails,” has been super helpful. Just like her “One Bottle Cocktails” book, there are some really creative crowd-pleasing drinks! This punch has been the favorite of the weekend so far. ❤️

  • IT'S MILKWEED SEASON! I have a lot of favorite cocktails, but I think this is my favorite flavor of all. It's so fun to find patches of milkweed, make the cordials & syrups, and ferment + save them for a whole year. I made this drink as a simple riff on a caipirinha or a daiquiri. I also included a few of my favorite milkweed recipes from @66squarefeet's amazing "Forage Harvest Feast" book and @EllenZachos's book, Foraged Cocktails! (Definitely recommend buying both books, there are more recipes where these came from!)
.
(Also, if you love foraging stuff, please check out my friend Alexis' new account -- @blackforager! She's taught me a ton about foraged foods and posts great lessons all the time. :))

  • Happy Negroni Week! While there seems to be a special day for every cocktail and spirit on earth, Negroni week is something a bit special. Started in 2013 by Imbibe Magazine, Negroni week raises money for charities from the Arbor Day Foundation to PAWS. I’ve partnered with the folks at @unclevals to create a Negroni variation in celebration! :) #ad
.
In looking for inspiration for my own Negroni variation, I came upon this melon salad recipe using Campari. It sounded fresh and perfect for this time of year so I tinkered with making a cocktail version using @unclevals Restorative Gin! I used cantaloupe, but I'm excited to try this with honeydew, watermelon, and a medley!
. 🍈Melongroni 🍈
▫️1.5oz cantaloupe-blended @unclevals Restorative Gin
▫️1oz dry vermouth
▫️1oz Campari
.
Add @unclevals gin and a handful of cantaloupe (and any other melons you’d like!) to a blender and blend. Using a fine mesh strainer, strain out all the solids of the melon. Combine strained @unclevals, dry vermouth, and Campari to a glass with ice. Strain into a lowball with ice and garnish with mint or edible flowers.

  • Usually my mother-in-law’s enormous punch bowl only gets pulled out of the attic for Christmas, but it came out of hibernation when the whole family was home for a wedding. I got picked on a bit for taking longer to make the cocktails than others took to make their dinner dishes... but it’s not often you get to make 16 cocktails at once with an Indiana summer garden. One of my favorite summer things to do is walk around the yard picking things to make floral arrangements in cocktail glasses. 😊🌱❤️🌽 Photos by my sister-in-law @kateruthphoto

  • Last week in Indiana I was harvesting some rhubarb from my in-laws' garden and remembered one of my favorite cocktail inventions with rhubarb and cognac. Cognac was a bit intimidating at first but once I started thinking of it as a smooth bourbon or whiskey, cocktail inventing got a lot easier. :)

  • I made this cocktail last weekend when I was home in Indiana. My mom has so many different kinds of flowers all spring, summer, and fall long which makes garnishing cocktails at home so much fun. :) I especially liked playing with the columbine flowers because they have their own built in pinch to hold the other flowers on the glass rim.
.
I also included a few photos of my mom’s garden and herb garden. It’s amazing what you can grow when you don’t have to put everything in pots! 🙌

  • Making some progress on the Harlem terrace garden. ❤️ I was a bit stumped on how to lay out the space but once I started making hanging planters for the pots, everything started to make a lot more sense. One thing I’m really excited to try over the next week is installing an irrigation system. Hopefully it works and I don’t have to spend *as* much time each day watering plants in the hot summer sun. 🌞 .
I’m also in Indiana right now for a wedding so I’ll take some photos of my mom’s crazy garden and post them tomorrow. :)

  • Just got back from a trip to Spain and in addition to the 13 bottles of sherry and vermouth we stashed away, I’ve already ordered a 5.2 lb vat of Castelvetraño olives. 🙃

Going to work on a drinking guide to Madrid + Seville over the next week, but right now just sitting on the couch flipping through all the photos with Sean and thinking about vermouth cocktails. ❤️ Photos here are of my favorite bar in the whole world, La Venencia in Madrid. It’s an old dusty bar with 5 sherries (and only 5 sherries) on the menu. In our two trips through Madrid we’ve visited this bar 5 times. 🥳🌟 (3 on this trip. 😋)

I first tried an avocado margarita in Austin a few years back. It was such a surprising flavor profile, making a refreshing margarita buttery yet light at the same time. In posting this recipe I am trying to remind myself to make it more often because it’s a do-over-and-over-and-over. 🌟

▫️.75oz Cointreau or Triple Sec
▫️1 oz fresh lime juice
▫️.25oz 1:1 simple syrup
▫️Couple spoonfuls of fresh avocado

Why I Grow an Urban Balcony Cocktail Garden

UES balcony cocktail garden

Two years ago when sean and I moved to our current apartment, one of the things I was most excited about was the possibility of a garden. I grew up in Indiana in the country with tons of land and my parents who took master gardening courses and it definitely showed in the flowers, veggies, and herbs they grew each year.

After living in NYC for over 5 years, I feel like there is this current of productivity and energy that I’m constantly riding. I’m not the type of person who can sit still for very long so most of the time the NYC energy is refreshing… but it does have its limits. I’ve noticed that when my mind starts to feel a little buzzy and busy, the best thing for me to do is find a project to work on with my hands. No podcasts, no screens- just some music and something tactile.

garden bloody mary

These days those tactile projects present themselves in the form of pottery class in the winter and cocktail gardening in the spring and summer.

cutting herbs with a barebones herb snipper

Gardening in New York City is not the efficient money-saving endeavor that it is back home where I grew up in Indiana. If I calculated the time and prep costs that go into the flowers, herbs, and tomatoes that I grow each summer it probably comes out to be as expensive as buying all the ingredients at he grocery.

rooftop garden in new york city

But gardening on the balcony is, of course, not *at all* about money.

It’s about watching little seedlings emerge in the early spring when summer still feels too far away.
growing seedlings for a garden

It’s about having an abundance of pansies both in color and quantity to use for cocktail garnishes.
pansies on balcony garden in NYC

And petunias!
petunias in balcony garden

And marigolds!
marigolds on a balcony garden with a bee

It’s also about having 10 times the amount of sage or oregano or nasturtium that you need for cooking. Of course you never *need* an enormous pot of thyme, but it sure is nice having a ton to make a giant summer dinner party. On most summer days, Sean makes herb omelets in the morning. On perfect summer days he’ll continue that by making herb potato salad in the afternoon, and a fresh herb salad for dinner. I’ll be in charge of the garden cocktails and the odd pickles, pesto, or jelly. (REALLY into onion jelly right now with peppers and lots of garlic.)

Eating a summer dinner on an UES NYC balcony

There are so many exciting profits of the balcony garden each summer, but my favorite thing of all is growing new-to-me varieties and things you can’t find in the grocery. Last summer I grew simple cherry tomatoes, some pear cherries, and 1 heirloom variety.

tomatoes harvested from balcony garden

This year I’ve got 6 different kinds of tomatoes growing with some ground cherries on the side.

nyc tomato garden

I’m also attempting to grow some scarlet runner beans from the lower balcony all the way up to the roof garden. So far I don’t have any beans to harvest just yet, but the beans are getting taller.

At the end of the day, this garden is not a negligible amount of work. But it is my favorite spot to be in the city. And it’s the best place to unwind around the plants with a cocktail and our Pimmpup.

Hey Adina! I received a bottle from the folks who make Sukkah Hill Spirits to include in some cocktails! They’re available in many spots around the country and in NYC, though! http://www.sukkahhill.com/find-us/
