The first time I saw a smoked cocktail was in the Chinatown speakeasy, @apothekenyc.The bartender lit a piece of wood on fire and placed an old fashioned glass on top to capture all the smoke.
Ever since seeing that cocktail, I’ve wanted to try making my own smoked drinks but never got around to trying it so when Breville asked me to be a part of their Holiday Mix-Off using their Smoking Gun®, I was really excited. (You can also use the Smoking Gun® to smoke things like meats or cheese to add flavor without changing the consistency!)
Below I’ve got an original persimmon cocktail I invented for the Holiday Mix-Off contest. The winning recipe and account will be selected based on the most likes and comments between Tuesday, 12/19 at 8AM PST and Thursday, 12/21 at 5P PST, and announced on Breville’s IG channel on Friday, 12/22. The prize is giving away 20 Smoking Guns to followers!
The Smoked Persimmon Tree
Ingredients
- 2 oz bourbon
- .75 oz lemon juice
- 1 tsp honey or .5oz honey simple syrup
- 1 quarter fresh persimmon
- dried rosemary for smoking
Instructions
Add persimmons to bourbon and lemon juice and middle until you have a pulpy mess. Strain off the solids and add the honey syrup and ice to your shaker. Add dried rosemary to the Smoking Gun® and smoke your cocktail under plastic wrap. Let it sit for about a minute and then add the top of your shaker and shake your drink normally. For an extra smoky flavor, you can also smoke your glass!
