Ever since Sean and I came back from Italy in February, cocktails in the spritz family have been our go-to drinks. They’re so simple, light, not too sweet, and the perfect thing to drink anytime– with an over-the-top brunch or as an early evening ritual. The formula is so simple. You take a liqueur or an amaro (I prefer a bit bitter), add some soda, a garnish, some ice, and top with a sparkling wine. Because I discovered my love for spritzes in Italy, I usually go for a Prosecco with an approachable price point like Riondo Prosecco to add bubbles to my cocktails. (And Riondo’s screw top is nice so you don’t have to drink the whole bottle in one sitting! :P) Now that we’re in that part of summer where it feels like it’s too hot to move your pinky finger, the effortless spritz is more appealing than ever. For my most recent spritz variation featuring Riondo Prosecco, I wanted to take advantage of summer’s best ingredients: the berries. I used my uncle’s homemade berry liqueur and added lemon, soda water, and some gooseberries I bought at the local farmer’s market. The spritz formula did not let me down! This drink with Riondo Prosecco was so good, like cooling-off-on-the-breezy-balcony-after-a-sticky-day-at-work good. If anyone is wondering, I’ll be making variations of this spritz for the rest of summer and drinking them on the roof garden while tending to my tomatoes. 🙂
